Speedo cable retainer 200

I replaced the clock today with a large tach and also installed a small clock in my '84. The job went very well until the last little item.

The speedo had the original anti-tamper ring on it which I broke apart. The retainer for the cable unscrewed normally. But when I went to plug the cable back into the speedo I couldn't get the plastic retainer to screw down. The cable is fitting in fine and is flush against the housing but the retainer doesn't seem to be able to get close enough to catch.

There is enough pressure on the cable that it stays n place and the speedometer works fine. I just hate it when I can't get something back together the way it was. Any tips on this?

Also wondering if I should leave the short sond cable unplugged. I read that it "loads" the odometer which could lead to it failing.
