light rear-end knocking sound 200 1989

hello, i'm new to this forum. i have been performing light maintenance on my son's 89 240 wagon for the last few years. while he's away at college i keep the juices flowing in the car and try to trouble shoot issues in hopes of having most gremlins worked out by the time he gets home for breaks. i have come to love laquisha, as my son has named the finely aged lady. she is an all stock gold 5 door wagon, still retaining the original paint. she only leaks about one drop of oil a week, has been uber dependable and has been a joy to drive (not to mention she has the storage capacity of a toyota landcruiser) the only exception to the "joy to drive" statement is there's a light knocking noise coming from the rear end but i can pinpoint the location. i have jacked up the car and moved the wheels, and what i can, but i don't know where it's coming from. it is not loud and seems to be more prevalent at slower speeds. the shocks need replacing, as one side is beginning to squeek a bit. the knocking noise is weak and is just more annoying than anything. anyone have a similar problem or solution? there is also a slight harmonic vibration that is starting to happen when i decelerate at slower speeds as well. is there a certain part in this forum where i can navigate and find posts of symptoms and solutions? i belong to bimmerfest because i drive and fix my own bmw z3 coupe and i have been told that volvo enthusiasts have a well supported forum here. thank you anyone who might shed some light on my quest for answers!
