A/C Pulley Seizing? 200 1992

With the heat turning up I've started using the A/C again recently. Had the system charged last summer and it's still blowing as cold as I remember. Haven't had any performance problems until today on a short drive to the grocery store I start to here squealing as I'm turning into the parking lot and the power steering is non-responsive. Park the car and look under the hood to see the belt to the A/C pulley "stalling" simultaneously to the squealing sound. I turn off the A/C and the squealing/stalling stops. But, I noticed that the A/C compressor has slid forward and to the right, as if pulled by the belt ... so the belts are no longer in plane. After I got home I ran the A/C for a bit in the driveway and didn't see the seizing again, but I didn't run it for long. Is this a symptom of seizing compressor bearings? The clutch as far as I can tell has been responsive, although it is not cycling when the A/C is on. I don't recall it cycling since before the charge last summer. I haven't looked underneath, but is there a bracket that may have bent or been compromised, allowing the compressor to slide forward? Of course the timing couldn't be better. Have a long trip planned next weekend and figured on having A/C.
