1989 744 Auto Trans 109,000 total miles
I've read the FAQs, and just want to confirm-
For my personal taste, the transmission shifts a tad high on rpm, and slightly hard when it does shift, at very light throttle settings.
I usually find myself reaching 2200-2400rpm, then letting off the throttle a bit to let the transmission shift to the next higher gear, then re-apply throttle after I'm in the next gear. This results in a bit of a "jerk" at each shift, of course.
I realize that 2200-2400 is NOT that high, but we're also talking very gently throttle and acceleration I am asking of the car.
I could probably live with the shift points I now have if the shifts were smoother. They are what I would call "firm," or "positive," but not a "slam" shift in any way, shape, or form.
If I read right, I should LOOSEN the kickdown cable a bit at a time (meaning remove tension from the cable), and that will make the upshifts occur a bit sooner and at lower RPM?
I gather if I loosen the cable a bit to achieve earlier shifts, it will still shift at a higher rpm, but only if I am applying more throttle, so if I am looking to accelerate faster, using more throttle will keep the transmission in each gear longer (higher rpm before upshift)?
For "kick-down" enough throttle will cause the trans to shift down one or two gears depending on line pressure and throttle position?
I am not one to ever allow a trans to kick-down (I will do it gently and manually), and if I need to stay in a gear longer for acceleration, I will pre-select the lower gear, or just lock-out O/D, so what I am looking for is the least obtrusive (wimpiest) auto-shifting practical, and I will do the rest if I need more aggressive use of power.
Thanks-
Bob
