'92 740 Regina fuel system 230000 miles.
Lost power suddenly while driving on the freeway yesterday and coasted to a stop. Fired up again for about 50 yards and then died for good. The tow truck driver fired it up and it started when on an incline (while lowering it off the truck), but it would not start again when on the street (cranks, no start, no smell of gas).
Fuel pump relay was replaced a year ago, but I got a new one yesterday anyway and put it in, but that was not it.
My question, friends, is whether this is failure of the in-tank fuel pump, or whether by chance it could be something easier? To my knowledge, it has not had the fuel pump replaced (the car had 109K on it when I bought it 13 years ago). Also (averting eyes downward sheepishly), it has never had the fuel filter replaced to my knowledge.
Any ideas other than to replace the filter and pump? It seemed odd to me to have such a sudden fuel stop, but I don't really know the symptoms of a fuel pump failure.
Thanks.
