Reverse light connection failure part 2 700

my mechanic said that there is nothing wrong with the neutral safety switch, but he did pull the shifter handle out and have a look at it. he said most likely the problem is a little rod inside the handle. he wasnt going to mess with it because everything is pressed and glued, and i said not to buy a new one. he replaced the bushings on the shifter linkage, and everything works except for the reverse lights. so i said stop before you mess it up. but reverse lights are not required in texas, so im just doing without them. i was thinking of mounting a toggle switch in the dashboard and running a hotwire back to the left bulb. any thoughts or ideas on a simple bypass job?
