I stored a perfectly good AW70 transmission under a lean-to for 6 years. I am ready to install it, or was, until I found some drops of water in the pan, and again when I stood the tranny up on the bellhousing, a little more water came out with the ATF. I poured the fluid out of the torque converter and did not find a single drop of water. It is bright red and clean.
Should I bother installing this transmission or save myself the trouble and get one from the yard?
I had left the lines connected, OD solenoid on, torque converter and dipstick in. I guess I was hoping the seals that keep ATF in would be good enough to keep the chance bit of rain it might see out. I was wrong, apparently, because I know there wasn't any water in it when I stored it. I did not drain the fluid when I stored it.
Does anybody have experience with this? I know that water/coolant in a running transmission will kill it fast, but what about one that has not turned?
Thanks!
Sean
