240 problems 200 1989

So I bought a 89 240 dl a few months back and it's been pretty solid thus far. However, I am trying to tune it up and get it running right. There are a few things I've noticed while driving it and I was hoping for some input.

-smell of burnt gas when the car is at idle and when I've parked after driving.

-The fuel pump sounds like its working fairly hard at times--I'm not sure if I should hear the fuel pump engage and disengage while driving?

-there's a whining from the engine bay, sounds like its from the passenger side...having trouble pinpointing it. May it coincide with the fuel system problems?

-There's a ticking or tapping noise in the engine bay at idle

-when shifting the tranny seems to struggle to shift or lags

-Scraping sound from the driver's side rear when accelerating--caliper piston stuck?

Thanks for reading
