Running poorly under 2000 RPM 700 1991

Has been running poorly awhile but noticed it's really under 2000 RPM that the problem shows up. If I put it into 1st or 2nd gear (it's an automatic) to get the revs over 2000 or so, it runs good. Plus, it runs fine on the freeway when the revs are 2500 or so. One more thing, if I let it idle for 5-10 minutes in the morning before taking off, it runs better. Also, starting has been getting harder, especially first thing in the morning. Ideas appreciated, thanks.
BTW, this car is Regina.
