140 ignition key buzzer 140-160

My '71 142 has a buzzer operated by an auxiliary switch in the ignition switch. The purpose of the buzzer would appear to be to remind you that you have left the key in the ignition. What mystifies me is that on my car the buzzer only sounds if the key is in the run or accessory position. If the key is in the off position, the buzzer does not sound. I don't really need a reminder that the key is in the ignition if the engine is running. However, I have left the key in the car in the off position, which is a bad thing since you can lock the 140s doors without the key!

Is the switch that operates the buzzer on my car defective, or is this the way that Volvo designed this?
