93 940sw tail light goes out when brake pedal depressed 900

Just replaced the passenger side brake/tail light with an OEM spec 21/5 bulb.
- With headlight switch off, brake light illuminates when pedal is pressed.
- Turn headlight switch on, tail light comes on.
- Then press brake pedal, tail light goes out, brake light does NOT come on, bulb failure lamp on instrument panel comes on.

What in the world is going on??

I replaced the bulb because the brake light filament had broken; the bulb failure light would also come on when I applied the brakes.

1993 940 base wagon.
