I have a 1988 740 GLE. IT has either the AW70 or 71 transmission. I forget which one without crawling under there right now. Here's my dillemma:
I drove it to the store a few days ago and everything shifted just fine. No problems at all! Went to leave the store and come home and the car wouldn't go into reverse so I couldn't back out of my space. It wouldn't go into drive either. I let it run for almost 10 minutes and warm up. All of a sudden you could hear the trans whine for about 5 seconds and then it stopped whining. I tried reverse and it worked and then it shifted into Drive no problem and drove it the rest of the way home just fine.
Yesterday, I went to drive to the store and again it wouldn't reverse out of the driveway. This time, no amount of waiting for it to warm up worked. It ran for almost 45 minutes and still nothing. I checked the fluid and it's filled what seems about two quarts to high (maybe more?)
Today I decided to pump out some of the fluid so i disconnected the lower hose from the radiator and started the car. Nothing pumped out. Went through the gears with my foot on the brake and giving it some gas and still nothing pumped out. Checked the stick and all the fluid is still in there so i know it didn't magically disappear. The whole time it didn't pump out one ounce of trans fluid. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm really not in the mood to drop the trans right now but I'll do what it takes.
Also, I'm hoping this is something I can do tomorrow in one day as I start a job on Tuesday (doing of all things, driving brand new cars off an assembly line).
