auto trans oil level 200 1992

Is the oil level in an automatic transmission supposed to be up to the front seal when the car is parked ?

I have a significant oil leak from the rear of the engine / front of the transmission. On the floor it looks like tranny fluid, but I have not tasted it. The car has not been started for a few weeks and it is still leaking.

I wouldn't think that the oil level in the engine sump would ever come up to the rear crank seal (reads full on the dipstick). If it did the crank throws would hit the oil and that's never good. But the transmission, I don't know.

Any ideas ?

Thanks

Greg
