My wife's 94 model 940 B230 NA had a melt down last Saturday, and I'm not sure what happened first....aka Chernobyl Nuclear Plant.
The car ran hot, I don't know how hot, but it must have been a scorcher.
My wife finally sees the steam coming from under the hood....yea, never noticed the temp gage.
A friend of hers stopped by to assist, and with the engine running, poured some water back into the radiator. It was then that my wife noticed the top hose was off the radiator. The guy pushes the hose back on and tightens the clamp and finished filling it with water. My wife drives it home, temperature normal for about 20 miles. I take it to my shop to evaluate, and I notice a leak at the thermostat housing.....ahhhh....bad thermostat.
I took the nuts off the housing and pulled it back, and the hose came off of the radiator again. This is when I noticed that about half of the top hose connection was broken off the radiator and the piece was still in the radiator hose....Ah s***....This is a 4 year old radiator.
The gasket on the thermostat was blown, and part of the rubber o-ring was missing.
It was old and cracked anyway.
I replaced the thermostat with a new one (plus new o-ring), and replaced the radiator with a good one that I had as a spare.
Re-filled the radiator with water, and I see water running down the front of the engine block near the water pump. With a light and mirror, I (wrongly) figure that the gasket is blown on the pump, so I pull it and replace the gasket and o-rings (again from my stock), and fill the radiator again...... I've still got a leak.
The water pump was leaking out of the weep hole on the bottom of the pump. This was a 3 year old Hepu pump, and I wrongly assumed it was still good.
So, off I go to the parts store again, and the only local pump I could find was a CarQuest at Advance Auto...this is what I bought.
I took it home, installed it and re-filled the radiator with water. This time no leaks, so I let the engine get warm and idle for about 20 minutes.
I then drained the water and replaced the Anti-freeze.
The engine runs great, so I dodged a bullet, but I still can't decide exactly what happened first to cause the chain reaction.....One thing led to another, but in what sequence, I don't have a idea.
Any comments are appreciated.
