So my 92 960 wagon has started to have some transmission glitches. The winter mode arrow and mode selector switches will start flashing with a periodic unsolicited change in modes. By changing modes I mean the transmission will suddenly switch into winter mode. Seemingly it goes back to E or S when I turn car off and restart after a bit. I think it goes back to whatever it was in before going haywire. After researching a bit, I learned it could be the Transmission Control Module TCM or the speed sensor among other things. On one forum the description a guy gave seems to match my issue exactly, it was fixed by replacing the TCM. So I looked into how much this part costs and its anywhere from $150 - $500. $150 if from Voluparts, the $500 is new.

On another website, the description of the TCMs locations made it seems like a fairly easy job. Only thing... it doesn't seem to be exactly where it was described. They said under the instrument panel right of the steering column. Well there's no module there. There is a module (similar looking anyway) to the far left of the column hanging from a bracket. When I say "left of the column... This is as if you were sitting in the drivers seat, not upside down looking up at the column. This module is obscured by bundles and bundle of wires and its position wont allow me to get a number off of it without unscrewing it from the bracket.

Is there likely another location for this module thus perhaps I am looking in the right area?

Ideally this is something I can fix myself without too much effort. Its a 92 and showing its age.. if you know what I mean? Would rather not spend a fortune on a garage fix.

Should this be too involved or too much to fix is there a simple way to disconnect and stop the use of the mode selector switches so I can just have it in Economy drive?

Oh by the way, I checked out the FAQ about the mode selector switches flashing and it mentions the PNP. The description listed there doesn't seem to be the same as mine as so I dont believe its the PNP. However, I am unable to read codes though. :/
