What did I break

My 1990 740 overheated (My fault waiting in border line up/engine idling/acfull)

The part concerned is close to firewall, just behind dipstick for transmission.

What blewapart was a part installed in the hose it joined two pieces of hose and had an electrical connection and all coolant drained through it. Is it a heater control module - I can't find pictures of it anywhere
