W / S / E / lights flashing and speedo cuts out on 1992 960 900

Hi, I am working on restoring a 1992 Volvo 960. I have looked into the potential problem with the Yazaki spedometer boards, but before I pull the dash apart and try to replace capacitors, I want to make sure I have the correct symptoms. When my speedo cuts out, the transmission "mode" lights flash and the driving mode cannot be changed. The feel of the transmission also changes slightly. is this the speedo or a sensor or some other problem??
