Hi - I've been away from the BB for several years since I sold my 960 wagon. I just looked at a 1972 142, and the seller is giving me a few days to think it over. It's rust-free as much as I can tell, and is mechanically pretty sound. But I have a few nagging questions: 1. The gap at the back of the doors is about 1/8-inch bigger at the bottom than at the top. I talked to my mechanic over the phone and he thinks the doors might just need adjustment. Could the body flex over time, even without rust, to cause a major problem that shows up in the gaps?
2. The previous owner buffed out the yellow car and went too far in places, exposing bits of the primer at corners and edges. Also, the hood has what looks like a kind of pitting in one spot. None of the damage is offensive and I'd like to drive it with the original paint. What can I do to shine it up as best as I can and protect the remaining paint and metal below?
The car has some other issues that don't seem too bad. Turn signal stalk won't stay in place when using the right signal. Windshield has a small stone crack. Dash is cracked (Does someone out there repair those?) AC fan works but doesn't blow cold. One piece of door trim is mangled and left in the trunk (anybody make these?)
I'm excited to rejoin the community of Volvo owners. Thanks for reading and offering any advice. Jim
