M46 OD removal: to pry or not to pry

I'm attempting to remove a J-type from my recently removed M46. I've got about 1/4 inch opened up at the union, but it's really reluctant to move any further. Do I just need to pry at this point? I've read Duane Hoberg's procedure and there's talk of getting in there with a screwdriver, but I'd like to get some more input before I get any more vigorous.
