shift lever spins freely 120-130 1966

M40 transmission shift lever on my '66 130 rotates freely in either direction. Spinning it doesn't seem to tighten or loosen anything (so apparently it is not threaded to the gear stub protruding from the floor). Can anyone tell me if this is normal, and if not, how do I fix it? Because is spins freely, I can't even figure out how to pull the lever off the stub in order to determine what is going on. Any help would be appreciated.
