Does a 240 need 2 mufflers?

I am getting really tired of replacing mufflers on my 240. I replace one and a month later the other one goes. Why does it need 2 in line when almost every other only has one. Is there some alternative, like a performance muffler, or a system that lasts a bit longer.?
