top speed 200 1986

i have volvo 240GL model year 1986 with B230K engine and m47 manual gearbox

, before i istall the thermostat the car top speed was 170 km/h and after i installed the thermostat the car did't exceed 150 km/h , please inform me the cause of this degradation of performance , thank you from Egypt
