Temperature Gauge advice 200 86

I am looking for some advice regarding the temperature gauge on my '86, 240 with 204,000 miles(i am the original owner!). The gauge has been acting eradically and by using information that I have learned through this forum, I have tried to repair it. I have removed the Temperature Comensating board and resoldered all of the connections, tightened the nuts behind the guage, tightened the connections at the rear of the PCB and cleaned and tightened the connection at the sending unit. I have seen some improvement, in fact it works normally when the car is cold. But after it really warms up, the needle starts to fall and after a while, the needle goes down to the bottom of the guage. If I smack the top of the dashboard, he needle will come up about a 1/3 of the way up and then gradually drop. When the car is cold and initially warms up, the needle rises to the horizontal position like it did when it was working normally. Any suggestions on what to try next? I am a little compulsive about having every element of this car working normally.

Thanks,
