I've got this gauge problem. My 164 had a rotten gauge cluster
and I found a GT cluster in a salvage yard. Cool. Except the
fuel and temp gauges were shot. Rats.
So, I've been looking in salvage yards to see what I could put
in their place, and I discovered that every 240/260/280 Z / zx I
looked at had 2 small round gauges that are exactly what I want:
coolant temp + oil pressure
fuel level + voltage
They're both small round gauges that I am going to measure to
see if they'll fit into the holes in the GT cluster.
How does the voltage sensor work? Just run wires to the fuse
box and ground and that's all? The oil pressure + idiot light
sender is quite large and I assume metric -- could I just get an
elbow fitting with metric on one side and standard on the other
to go into the old oil pressure hole? Suggestions on where to
get such a thing?
Also, the current temp + fuel gauges are 5 volt gauges. Any
idea if it is standard to use 5 volt or 12 volt for these sorts
of gauges? (specifically will the datsun gauges expect 5 or 12
volts? If they expect 12 volts can I just bypass the temperature
regulator to give it 12 volts?)
Correct replacements don't seem like they'd be too easy to
get -- my options are to grind open the old gauges and fix the
guts, put in somewhat incorrect gauges, or put in these datsun
gauges that have lots more information that I'd want. Choices
2 and 3 seem about equal in cost so I'd like to go with 3 if it
is possible without screwing other stuff up in the process.
opinions?
Thanks,
chris
