tranny problems? 700 90

My wife and I recently purchased a 1990 760 GLE Turbo. We got a super deal knowing that it had transmission problems, but not the extent, though it was just the kick down cable. When the car accelerates it will not go into the next gear unless you slightly let off the accelerator. The kick down cable has been adjusted correctly and the transmission fluid is at the correct level. I get conflicting opinions from local mechanics - most want at least 800 bucks just to hazard a guess.
