Don't spend too much coin fooling with this problem. If it's an Aisin-Warner trans. there's plenty of good used ones out there. Just swap it out. If it's a german ZF then good luck finding one...they're just plain junk. Around here you can pick up a good trans (AW) for $500. About 4 hrs. to change.
