ring gear 200 1982

I found a 1982 244 turbo for $700cdn (could probably get it for 500) but it needs a ring gear. I am not much of a mechanic (lots of vw bug experience but that hardly counts) how much work is involved in replacing a ring gear? Can some hack (me) do it in his drive way?
