'86 GL Standard Wagon 1986

Hello. I have the chance to get a 1986 GL Standard with 90,000 miles as a hand-me-down from my parents. It looks practically new. I currently drive a Chevy Nova ('87) with 95,000 miles. It works fine but is a little the worse for wear. I would like a safer car -- but I'm a graduate student and have no money to buy a new (or used) car.

Should I take the Volvo? I have a couple of specific concerns: that Volvos of that vintage don't drive well inthe snow, because they are RWD, and that they need more repairs and cost more to repair than other cars, including the Nova (which is basically a Toyota Corolla.)

Any advice would be helpful. Anything else to watch out for?
