I'd jump at the chance for a well-maintained 240 with only 90K miles-- that is effectively one third of its useful service life!

That said, the things to watch for (or have your parents fix first!):

1) Heater blower motor (time consuming repair=expensive!)

2) Deteriorated electrical wiring harness (have your parents had a lot of problems with electrical quirks?)

Those are probably the biggies with that car. The Volvo is not a low maintenance car, and if you have to pay someone to do it you may find it more expensive to own compared to a Nova. It will also be quite a bit harder on gas...

As for driving in snow, it will be fine if you install 4 real snowtires (not all-season) and put 80lbs of balast in the trunk over the rear axle.
