rattle from bellhousing 200 98

Hi I've just aquired a 240 gl with 2.3 engine. I'm In the UK so I reckon this query belongs in the 200 series Forum, not being sure on the U.S. markings for these models. O.K. back to the problem. This noise sounds like the exhaust blowing up front but it ain't. The previous owner had the vehicle put through it's annual roadworthiness certificate M.O.T. as we call it here. It passed with no problems regardless of the noise as the tester determined it was a heat baffle plate in the bellhousing above the torque converter which is supposed to deflect the heat away from fluid pipes in there. Thats where I went duhhh. now I,m happy with the car cos I believe the engine will fit my wifes 760 which is also a 2.3 engine but seizing due to oil gauze clogging. But if I can sort the problem of the rattle we will use the 240 as long as it will run and repair the 760 engine which is ready to lift out anyway. So anybody any welcome ideas

Thanks

mike
