Tranny fluid level 700 1987

Folks

I've got a tranny leak, just not sure where yet. A question on checking fluid level though: after driving 15-20 miles, I'll pull over, pull the stick, and it's entirely dry. Reinsert the stick and check again, and the fluid level shows good. Is this normal to have the stick dry on the first look after driving this long?
