Total AC rebuild - opinions, experiences solicited 200 83

I really don't want to go through another sticky Carolina summer w/out AC. Here is the deal with my car :

AC (original R-12, York compressor setup) quit one day about 4 years back. Jumping the pressure switch shows compressor/clutch work fine, so I must have developed a leak.

Fast-forward to present time. Now I want AC, a full R-12 charge is close to Blue-Book value for my car... it seems an alternative refrigerant may be in order.

I would replace all the seals, o-rings, hoses and compressor gaskets (yeah, I'm a masochist) - if I keep this compressor. I heard there may be a NAPA bracket to fit a Sanden compressor to the older York-euipped 240s.

Bottom line, I'm going to be replacing a lot of stuff, and spending some dough, so I want it done right and I want to make it last. In essence, I am in a position to rebuild the entire system. This leaves with with some very different choices and I'd like to hear from the guys out there who have tried these various alternative refrigerants - any of them - and what changes you implemented. What setups are you guys running with Autofrost? R406a? Freeze-12? R134a? And how satisfied are you/would you do it the same way again?
