Hey all,
Went over to do a compression test on the Volvo I was looking at and pay the man if all was well.
While I was there I looked a little more into what was up with the way it was running. Determined it was running really rich. Had the air cleaner off and was looking at the throttle plate adjustment to make sure it was closing all the way. When I opened the throttle by hand and looked down into the manifold, I saw a pool of liquid. "That ain't right" sez I, so I turn the key on so the fuel pump is pumping and look again. Drip drip drip from the cold start valve. "A-ha!" sez I.
Also tested the manifold pressure sensor to make sure it would hold vacuum (it did) and tested the distributor vacuum diaphragm to make sure it held (it did) and also moved the points plate appropriately. I adjusted the points to proper spec (they were a little close together).
I was following the FI wiring harness to find the ground locations. As I got to the area near the battery I discovered an FI harness plug with 2 connectors connected to nothing. Breaking out the excellent owner's manual (great FI system diagram!) I found that I did not know where the intake air temperature sensor was and that that's what this plug probably went to. Looked a little more and I found it right behind the right front headlight. Plugged the wires back in. I clamped off the fuel line to the cold start valve with a vice grips and fired the engine up and it ran MUCH better. It idled at a normal speed and no more stalling when the auto tranny is put into gear.
It is still running a little rich (exhaust smell indicator) and is missing just a touch intermittantly. The plugs were nice and carbon fouled and I didn't clean them especially well so that probably accounts for the miss. I did check for spark at each wire and I'm getting it there. I'll put new plugs in later on. I think it's running a bit rich due to vacuum leaks. I can hear a hissing and I can only pull about 10" of vacuum on it according to my trusty vacuum gauge. The hissing is coming from some injector seals I think but all the regular vacuum hose will be replaced. Does anyone know what the hose sizes are? I think I noted 3 distinct sizes: small for distributor advance and EGR, larger for charcoal canister and larger than that for the hose to the manifold pressure sensor.
I read that article posted here a coule days ago about D-Jet which indicated that vacuum leaks can actually make it run rich since the fuel is metered largely due to manifold pressure.
Anyone know of a source for the 4 largest molded hoses that run to and from the aux. air valve and idle adjusting plastic thing? I don't think straight hose would work well here, especially for the 2 90 degree elbow pieces. Also gotta find a new cold start valve, I will check with the local import parts place here tomorrow when they are open.
I have an IPD catalog but I am not impressed since there are almost no listings for the B30 stuff.
There is a little coolant weeping from the thermostat housing. Is there any gasket there besides the thermostat gasket?
I also drained and replaced the oil because there was some gas in it due to the extreme rich running. Is that oil drain plug supposed to take a 1" socket? :-) Jeez
Thanks to everyone for all your help. I paid the man today and I'll bring it home in the next day or 2.
