2 good questions 200 1988

I've got two questions. MY front pass side shock has some type of fluid on it and the rubber coveer that is on it is as brittle as a rusy nail. I would assume that it is leaking and needs to be replaced. I wnt to go ahead and have all 4 repalced but I want to have a more firm ride. I have read on the board that Boge Turbo Gas are the most popular. So I (1) what would be the recomendations of the board for the best performance but a good ride? Second, there is this annoying knocking sound comming from my rear pass side tire. I have checked all the basic stuff hub cap, wheel, lugs and I actually checked the brake pads and housings but no luck. It is not constant but it comes on for two reasons: moderate to heavy braking and over ruff road. When braking, the knock slows down with the car ie: the slower the car the wider the gap between knocks. (2) What is that noise and how do I solve it? This is my month to get all the suspention work done and I am eager to get started. TIA
