Volvo 960 Rough Ride - Tires? 900 1993

I have a '93 Volvo 960 that I really like a lot. The ride is great at high speeds on a smooth highway. However, at low speeds on rough roads the ride is rough. I'm about to renew the tires. Currently I have Michelin MXV4 195-65R15 tires on the car. Is there a better tire for the rough ride problem?

Also, there is a "clunking" noise in the rear of the car at times when I hit a bump at low speeds. Any ideas as to what that could be? It's been looked at by mechanics and they can't seem to find anything.
