240DL wont start 200 1981

I just helped my daughter buy a 1981 240 DL in Hilo, Hawaii, last week. Seemed to run fine at the time. Now that I'm back home in Saipan, she informs me that it won't start. Here's the details:

-The last day it ran, the Alternator light started coming on when the engine was shut off (bad alternator?).

- It now wont even turn over. Acts like the battery is completely dead.

-Jump starting gets the engine to turn over, but it will not start.

The last one is what has me puzzled. If its just an electrical problem, why won't it at least start up from a jump start?

Appreciate any comments or suggestions.
