conversion of the A/C 700 1988

HELP!!! I have a 740 turbo and my A/C just died... Had the funeral yesterday at the garage and found out that there was no way to fix it unless i converted to the new stuff. Seems expensive though. He was charging me about 700$C. Is it true? Will I have to live without my A/C? If anyone out there can give me an idea of the cost or ideas, I would appreciate. So would my 8 week old baby....
