why does engine sound like a diesel truck? 700 1992

My 1992 740 wagon sounds like a diesel truck. Do the valves need adjusting? Is the timing off? Runs fine, a little hesitation but overall a fine engine just noisy. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
