"Coincidence" SOLVED !!!!! 700 1987

Problem solved !!! I kept thinking about this, and thinking about this, and far back in the deepest recess of my mind I had a vague recollection of reading an old posting that had something to do with some kind of capacitors or such that were mounted on the fender wall next to the battery. They regulated the fuel injectors, I think. Since I had removed my battery the night before to throw a charge on it, I thought maybe, just MAYBE, I bumped these capacitors - or whatever they are - when I was reinstalling the battery in that cramped little corner. Sure enough, one of the wires was broken off of one of the capacitors !! Resoldered it and - VOILA! - engine back to normal!!

Who would have thunk it! I asked my mechanic if he had actually pulled the injector when he told me that he tested it, and he said no, that he had put a stethoscope on it. I really can't fault him though, as I dumped the car on him unannounced, and he did a quick once-over on it in 15 minutes. He is, afterall, my regular mechanic for all of my "normal" cars, and never works with Volvos. He's used to working on cars that are LOGICALLY laid out, and that don't need a team of NASA engineers to fix the most basic of items.

I think my next work vehicle will me a '93-'95 Ford Taurus. I had an '88 Taurus that was the most reliable, simply-to-work-on car I have ever owned in my 25 years of driving. Why I got rid of it, I'll never know. Parts are UNBELIEVABLY cheap, and the repairs are easily in the realm of the weekend home mechanic. Oh well, live and learn! As I have $5,000 total wrapped up in a new Volvo engine in this car, I'll hang in there with it, as I would not get my money back if I sold it. Thanks everyone for all of your tips as to what the problem might have been. I really appreciate it!

Now, if anyone knows the trick on how to loosen and pivot the A/C compressor so as to get a new belt on the pulley, please let me know.
