Oil temp sender in drain plug 700 '90

How and where is the oil temp sender, which tells the oil temp guage what temp the oil is? I had an oil change at a volvo dealer and when the car came back the temp guage did not work. Could it be that they put back a simple plug and not my original? This is in a 780 Bertone.
