Board members,
It's one of the few things that can leave you stranded with these cars, and to think that they only cost about three dollars apiece. Yep, those stinkin' little alternator brushes, you rarely think about them, but without them, no charge. Anyway most of you have already run into this before, but it's something that I wanted to remind everyone of with the cold weather setting in, it would be a pity to be sitting by the side of the expressway with a 20 below wind chill for such a forgotten simple thing to fix. To those that haven't run into this yet, the brush holder is held into the alternator with just two screws, and if your are patient you can have the holder out of the alternator in 10 minuates, without even removing the alternator. Then you go to your local bosch shop, and either buy just the copper brushes for around 3.00 apiece and solder them in or , buy the whole brush holder assy.and it takes about five minuates to install. If your 240 has around 100000 miles then, it's time. And if you aren't sure, then better safe than sorry. My 1980 242 quit on me at around 850000 because of this, and my 1987 245 at around 140000. Be sure not to forget to disco. the battery first.
You have been warned.
Goober has spoken!!
