Under acceleration, my 240 is exhibiting what sounds to me like a loud clattering noise coming from the engine.
--If I accelerate any more than very gently, the clattering gets louder and I get a little smoke from the exhaust.
--The sound is NOT evident at idle or under what I would consider to be "gentle" acceleration.
--It seems to be most noticeable in low RPM-high torque situations, such as pulling away from a stop sign, accelerating in 3rd or 4th gear without downshifting to make a lane change, etc.
--It also seems to be more evident as the engine gets hotter...before the engine is fully warmed up, it's hardly noticeable at all.
Recent work done to the engine includes replacing spark plug wires & spark plugs, replacing the thermostat, changing the oil (10w30) and adjusting the timing. The noise became most evident after adjusting the timing.
Any ideas on what I can do to quiet this beast down? I'm afraid I'm doing damage...Thanks in advance!
