122 rear axle removal, need tip 120-130 1967

I am parting out a mid-60's 122 this Wednesday. I intend to pull rear drums to save, and would like to pull axles. I have puller for drums. Volvo original manual says to use slide hammer with special threaded end for pulling axle-with-bearing out of housing. I don't have such a threaded end nor puller. Do I really have to use something like that? I am thinking of putting nut back on axle over scrap large washer, and hoping to get enough distance where backing plate was to rap back of nut with drift pin. Any tips would be appreciated, Dennis
