removing warm air intake? 700 1985

i'm wondering if disconnecting my warm air intake from the intake system would be safe? My '85 740 GLE dosn't run so well, i heard this was ok as long as you fix the flap so it stays open for the normal intake.

Also i there anyway to increase air flow into the intake?

i'm also wondering if there are any tuning mods. that could be done to increase the acceleration(drive ratio) i need a little more punch.
