why am I burning up fuel pumps 700 85

Hi i have an '85 760 turbo wagon which has just died for the third time in a couple of months. each time it is the fuel pump. I don't know what to do. I have a good in tank pump (now), a good relay, a good pressure regulator, when I have a working pump the car runs awesome for a car with 265,000 mi on it! any help would be appreciated!
