noise coming from main fuel pump 200 1990

on my 1990 volvo 240, i just started noticing a noise coming from my main fuel pump.it sounds like it is pumping air intermittedly through it.its loud enough that i can stand on the drivers side of the car and hear it. i just replaced the fuel filter about 2 months ago so i dont think it should be clogged up yet.the car runs fine, i just wonder if this sound is going to eventually lead me somewhere stranded. any is appreciated .
