Nut holding on steering wheel 200 1988

Im having some real trouble getting the nut off that holds the steering wheel on. I got the deep socket like the Bentley 240 manual said to but it just wont come off. Theres this blue stuff around the nut and im assuming that is what is really holding that thing on there...any help at all would be appreciated!! Thanks!
