740 turbo hesitates under heavy acceleration 700 1991

I have a '91 740 turbo. The turbo seems to work fine except when i get on the gas more. The car starts to hesitate and stutter for a few seconds and then takes off. I notice it more when I'm up to speed on the highway and accelerate to pass or if I'm getting on the on ramp. 2 days a go my girlfriend followed me. She said my car shot out a noticable cloud of black smoke as soon as it started hesitating, but only at first, not for the entire time. Under normal acceleration everything seems to work fine. I can feel the turbo kick in and the car goes no problem. Could it be the engine running rich. I don't know what to do and I'm to poor to have my mechanic look at it. Please help if you can. Any advice would be very helpful. Thanks
