Engine dies when i'm driving but radio and lights stay on. fuel? power stage? ??? 700 1985

Lately, when i drive my 1985 Volvo 740 GLE it'll be running fine but then suddenly the engine will silently die-out. The radio and lights continue to stay-on but my car is off. I pull to the side of the road before i get hit and turn everything off. Then i'll attempt to start it up again and it gives a odd jerking feeling and shakes. This will happen about 2 to 3 times and then it'll finally start on the 3rd or 4th time. It can happen on the freeway, on the roads, or anywhere. I've noticed that my gas pedal has an odd spungy feeling and that's why i suspect it may be a fuel problem. But i was told by someone who works for Volvo that it was the "power stage" because the engine just dies. I'm not sure though because he didn't even look at my car.

Last night was the most recent ;ime that it had did this because i havn't driven it in a couple of weeks. I went to turn a corner and i heard that the engine had died and i pressed the gas and it jerked itself back-on. It was odd but it kept going.

I have a:

1985 Volvo 740 GLE

w/ 179,000 miles.

Automatic.

If anyone knows or even has an idea what this may be, it would be a great help. I don't want to spend an insane amount of money on a mechanic if i don't have to. Thank you.
