Hi everyone,
I'm going to be restoring the '69 122S (B20 engin) I've had parked in the garage these last few years and I would like to swap the M40 (4 spd) for a M41 (4spd + O/D) gearbox. I've sourced an M41 that I can use for it but I would really like to have the O/D switch on the shift knob rather than somewhere else such as the streering tree.
If possible I would also like to change the stick shift over to a short throw like what's in the P1800 and the 240's, etc.
I have read somewhere that if one makes a few mods to the transmission tunnel to accomodate the location of the gearshift leaver one can use the shifter assembly from a M41 equipped late model (last year only I think) 140 or the very first 240's that had the B20/m41 combination.
So far I have had difficulty in locating a M41 from either the last year of the 140 or the first year of the 240. Does anyone know where I might be able to lay my hands on one ?
In case I am unable to locate the particular tranny or shifter assembly that I need I am trying to devise a feasible workaround. To do this I need some information about how the switching system works on the M41. In particular I am wondering how the lock-out switch (i.e. the one that only lets the OD work in 4th) works and how it is incorporated into the gearing system.
I think I can obtain a shifter assembly off a 4 speed P1800 which will give me the short throw shifter set further back toward the driver that I desire.
I also have an old 240 with an M46 that I'll soon be euthanizing. I'm wondering if if it might be somehow possible to take the lock-out switch, solenoid and O/D relays, etc, from it and adapt those parts to the P1800 M41 shifter assembly so that I can have the OD switch on the shifter and have the lock-out system work so that power can only get to the OD solenoid when the car is in 4th gear. Would something like that be feasible ?
Any ideas/comments/suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanx,
Roj
P.S. I have managed to find a disc brake equipped rear end off a P1800 that I can use in my 122. Does anyone happen to know what gear ratio those rear-ends had ?
